We Heart Mentors

Tomorrow is my day to blog on the GLMA blog (are you looking at that yet? I highly recommend it!). While I was writing the first draft of that entry, I thought it makes sense to encourage you to be very appreciative of your mentor.

I know that you already are. However, I’m sure there are times when you feel critical of something you see, or impatient to do things your way, or frustrated at what you’re not allowed to do. These urges are healthy. Still, put yourself in your mentor’s shoes for a few minutes. No matter how helpful you are, your presence causes a break in the normal routine of the media center. There’s nothing you can do about this, except to express your gratitude as often and sincerely as you can, and of course be as helpful as possible. That’s quite a trick when we’ve forced you all to have such detailed agendas to accomplish while there.

I’m currently writing thank-you notes to the fall intern mentors. I will do the same for this semester’s batch, eventually (if you supply me with some kind of mailing address). It’s too bad the University or the state can’t pay mentor professionals extra for helping out the next generation.

A couple of updates:

  • Remember that we’re “checking in” on your Google Doc or intern blog approximately every week. I think I’m caught up to within a week as of today. I understand that some of you will have long gaps in your activities, so don’t be concerned if I check in and there’s nothing new there. Don’t expect much feedback, if any – but I will write in or comment if warranted. Also, you may insert questions there, but make sure to bold them.
  • Check out the new subscription capability: go to the 7460 Home Page and subscribe via your preferred method.

It was good to see most of you Saturday. Send your mentor a valentine. Vote tomorrow!
